Inboard outboard vs outboard boat motors10/5/2023 Since there is no physical access to the motor from within the boat, these are only operated from the helm. It has more horsepower, a higher torque, and can typically accelerate faster. Inboard motors are close siblings to the engine you’ll find in a car. An inboard motor often has a separate rudder that steers the boat.Ī big difference between these two motor types is their mechanical properties. From the exterior of the boat, all you’ll see is an angled shaft with the propeller at the end.įrom inside of the boat, you won’t see the motor at all. The bottom of the boat near the center will house the motor. What Is an Inboard Motor?Īn inboard engine, on the other hand, has most of the components inside of the boat. All the components are mounted outside of the boat, hence the name. Outboard motors are the only option that can be seen while sitting in the boat. You’ll see the large motor component attached to the rear of a boat, and a lower unit will go straight down that has the propeller attached to it. You can recognize an outboard motor quickly on a boat. Larger options are almost exclusively operated through the helm. The second option is used mostly for smaller boats and smaller motors. There may be a throttle to adjust the speed, or the motor might be a single speed. In the second configuration, you’ll use a tiller that’s mounted directly on the motor. There is a throttle and steering wheel that operate the motor remotely. In one way, the motor is controlled through the helm. Depending on the size and orientation that you opt for, there are two ways to operate these motors: What Is an Outboard Motor?Īn outboard engine is an independent motor that mounts on the rear of your boat. In this piece, we’ll explain everything you need to know about an outboard and inboard motor, and we’ll help you pick which one is right for you. If you want to make the right choice, then you’ll need to learn more about both motor types. The tough part is that outboard and inboard motors are both valid choices and they’re both designed for different people. It’s the heart of your vessel, so you want to avoid making the wrong choice. All 3 are fine and service millions of boats each, but one is probably better for the type of boating that youdo.A boat’s motor is a huge investment. So you have to choose based on the type of boating that you do, your budget, and also what is popular in your area (this is important when looking for a mechanic). Also handling an inboard in reverse takes more practice since the prop is fixed and the rudder is not effective until water flows over it, either from prop blast or motion. Also it is often hard to trailer an inboard since the trailer has to be higher to accomodate the prop/rudder. The disadvantages are that the prop is fixed, is deeper, and can’t be tilted up like the outboard or I/O. Inboards probably have the best combination of engine placement, inside where it’s accessable, farther forward for good weight placement, and weight (they can be lighter than I/Os). However they are very expensive and heavier than 2 cycle engines. They are powerful, quiet, have outboard convenience and are now available in high power versions (200+ HP). The new 4 cycle outboards may have it all in one package. Some folks disconnect the pumps and mix the oil and gas manually. 2 cycle outboards, where the gas and the outboard motor oil are mixed together almost all have automatic mixing pumps (above 40 HP or so) that take care of this chore, but have been known to fail, with catastrophic results. The disadvantages are that outboards have become as complicated as spacecraft and unless you are a good mechanic, you can’t do much if any, of the maintenance yourself. A hole, or tear, in it can sink the boat.Īn outboard is probably the most expensive, can be tilted clear of the water, and has the best horsepower to weight ratio. Also, the rubber bellows that encloses the drive shaft, as it comes out of the boat and into the outdrive is usually at least partly submerged. The disadvantages are that the outdrive can’t tilt clear of the water, so if you boat in saltwater the aluminum outdrive is always submerged and subject to corrosion. You can get to the engine pretty easily in most boats. I/Os are the often the least expensive, and you have the advantage of having a realtively car like (simple) installation. What is better? An I/O, an inboard, or an outboard? What’s cheaper?

Spamsieve disappearing emails10/5/2023 There is no straightforward way to merge restored data in with messages received since the last backup, and also with the live data on the server. Restoring a backup is difficult because Mail data is constantly changing.I’m happy to have most of my mail archived outside of Mail.) (See EagleFiler’s Importing Attachments instructions for more about this. So the backup of the local data will necessarily be incomplete. Making a backup is difficult because, even if you set the preference, Mail no longer automatically fully downloads all messages. You may not notice that anything is wrong unless you are looking at the particular mailbox or messages that are affected.īecause the data is synced to the server, problems can propagate to other Macs and iOS devices. These sorts of issues are pernicious because: But my advice is to hold off on updating to Catalina for now. I don’t know whether these are due to Mail bugs or to other factors such as problems on the Mac or with the mail server. And eventually this syncs back to the first Mac, where the message disappears as well. If the message was moved to a server mailbox, other devices see the message as deleted. Moving messages between mailboxes, both via drag-and-drop and AppleScript, can result in a blank message (only headers) on the Mac. Updating Mail’s data store from Mojave to Catalina sometimes says that it succeeded, but large numbers of messages turn out to be missing or incomplete. Nevertheless, people contact me because it’s not unreasonable to wonder if third-party software is to blame, and I also hear from people who want a second opinion because what Apple support told them didn’t make sense. (Ironically, one of the bugs I’ve encountered is the inability to delete messages via AppleScript.) And, in fact, most of the damage has occurred without my Mail plug-in even being installed. Thankfully, none seem to be caused by my apps. I’ve heard a bunch of reports of data loss in Apple Mail. I’m working on more posts about the Catalina release, but I wanted to start with a short warning.

Best taurine10/5/2023 It is believed to be less common in small and medium breed dogs. It is also seen in Cocker Spaniels associated with taurine deficiency. *Cats are generally more likely to develop hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (a heart disease)ĭilated cardiomyopathy is recognized as a genetic condition in dogs, typically in large or giant breeds, such as the Doberman Pinscher, Great Dane, or the Irish Wolfhound. (Please see the Vet-LIRN DCM Investigative Update for more technical information on the reported cases, including those without a formal diagnosis of DCM). Although the FDA first received a few sporadic reports of DCM as early as 2014, the vast majority of the reports were submitted after the agency notified the public about the potential DCM/diet issue in July 2018. However, this case information is still valuable, as it may show heart changes that occur before a dog develops symptomatic DCM. We did not include in these numbers the many general cardiac reports submitted to the FDA that did not have a DCM diagnosis. The numbers below only include reports in which the dog or cat was diagnosed with DCM by a veterinarian and/or veterinary cardiologist. Many of the reports submitted to the FDA included extensive clinical information, including echocardiogram results, cardiology/veterinary records, and detailed diet histories. On this page:Īdditional Information Cases Reported to FDAįor the purposes of this investigation, the FDA defines a “case” as an illness reported to FDA involving a dog or cat that includes a diagnosis of DCM. The FDA is using a range of science-based investigative tools as it strives to learn more about this emergence of DCM and its potential link to certain diets or ingredients.įollowing an update in February 2019 that covered investigative activities through November 30, 2018, this is the FDA’s third public report on the status of this investigation. We understand the concern that pet owners have about these reports: the illnesses can be severe, even fatal, and many cases report eating “grain-free” labeled pet food. Based on the data collected and analyzed thus far, the agency believes that the potential association between diet and DCM in dogs is a complex scientific issue that may involve multiple factors. The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN), a collaboration of government and veterinary diagnostic laboratories, continue to investigate this potential association. Many of these case reports included breeds of dogs not previously known to have a genetic predisposition to the disease. In July 2018, the FDA announced that it had begun investigating reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs eating certain pet foods, many labeled as "grain-free," which contained a high proportion of peas, lentils, other legume seeds (pulses), and/or potatoes in various forms (whole, flour, protein, etc.) as main ingredients (listed within the first 10 ingredients in the ingredient list, before vitamins and minerals). FDA continues to encourage research and collaboration by academia, veterinarians, and industry. While adverse event numbers can be a potential signal of an issue with an FDA regulated product, by themselves, they do not supply sufficient data to establish a causal relationship with reported product(s). FDA has followed up on a subset of these reports, but is unable to investigate every report to verify or confirm the reported information. A count of reports of DCM in dogs submitted to FDA as of November 1, 2022, has been added to Questions & Answers: FDA’s Work on Potential Causes of Non-Hereditary DCM in Dogs. FDA does not intend to release further public updates until there is meaningful new scientific information to share.

Fixed costs in business10/5/2023 Prior to the patron walking in to order lunch, the staff is in place, the fryer is heated up, the grill is ready, the lights are on and the restaurant is ready to serve. A good example is the fast food restaurant. The idea is that every product or service provided has some form of a variable and fixed cost. This is where the break even point comes into play. The underlying principle of a fixed cost is the expense requires payment no matter what happens. Even though you may not sell any product, they still have to be paid. In some small businesses, the staff is salaried. Think of the hospital, it still needs doctors and nurses even if no patients show up at the emergency room. In some industries, salaries are paid even if no work is accomplished. Get the idea? These are fixed costs.Įach industry is going to have different forms or types of fixed costs. The insurance company has to be paid as a legal requirement for you to be in business. Your bank will want its note payment regardless of your production. The key to understanding fixed costs is to think of what would I have to pay if nobody showed up to work this month or I did not sell a single widget, in effect I did nothing to earn money? You can see how rent qualifies the landlord is going to require payment due to contractual obligation. Above, rent was sighted as an example, but other types of costs that are required include electricity, insurance, interest on debt and more. Some of these costs are fixed in nature due to the underlying need or compliance for the item. In accounting we use the break even point formula to establish some form of minimum production or sales to cover costs. If you want to get there, then do something about it: If you are not there, odds are your company doesn't have the proper systems, programs, processes and controls in place to achieve proper levels of profit. For those industries requiring higher thresholds of knowledge, certification, or licenses, the net profit must be greater than 7% to compensate for these additional forms of investment. For most industries, the net profit is the reward for the capital investment made into the business. The profit is always NET of an owner's compensation package. Is your company's bottom line at least 7%? If you are interested in a more in-depth understanding of this term, the following sections are educational based in describing ‘Fixed Costs’. In financial accounting, the gross margin is used to cover fixed costs. In cost accounting, fixed costs are offset by the contribution margin. There is a difference between the cost accounting definition and the financial accounting definition. Common examples include rent, insurance, salaries and interest. Why is it important to understand fixed costs? How is it used in cost accounting and in financial reporting? Finally, what are examples of fixed costs? Short Answerįixed costs are those cash expenses that must be paid whether the business produces or sells a single product. It doesn’t matter whether you produce or sell one widget or several thousand, the rent must still be paid. The most common definition associated with fixed costs is expenses that must be paid regardless of production or sales volume. It has several meanings based on its usage. ‘Fixed costs’ is a business term used mostly in cost accounting. |
